Prof. (Dr.) Rup Kumar Barman (b. 07.02.1975) is a professor of History at Jadavpur University (Kolkata, India: 700032) and currently discharging his duties as the Vice-Chancellor of Harichand Guruchand University (Gaighata, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India: 743287). He has also served Murshidabd University (Berhampore, West Bengal, India-742149) as its Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Barman has previously served St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling (2000-2001), ABN Seal (Govt.) College, Cooch Behar (2001-2002), and Jadavpur University (2002-2006) as a Lecturer of History. He was also a Reader (Associate Professor) in the Department of International Relations of Jadavpur University (2006-2009).

Apart from serving at the Department of History of Jadavpur University as the Head of the Department (2016-2020), Dr. Barman has performed his duties as the Coordinator of the Centre for Ambedkar Studies (2010-2023), Deputy Coordinator of the UGC-Special Assistance Programme (2010-2020), Member of the Finance Committee (2016-2019), Member of the Executive Council (2016-2019), Member of the Court (2016-2020), Liaison Officer of the Equal Opportunity Cell (2016-2018), Joint Coordinator of PG Evening Course (2005-2007, 2010-2013, and 2017-2019), and many other committees of Jadavpur University as Chairman, Coordinator or as a member.

As the Principal Investigator, Dr. Barman has completed 14 Major Research Projects and 8 Minor Research Projects (sponsored by various organisations including UGC, ICSSR, INSA, MAKAIAS, and ICHR). Prof. Barman has authored 17 Books, 02 edited volumes, and over 100 research articles. Under his supervision, 18 PhD Research Scholars and 29 M.Phil. scholars have completed their research. Along with attending national and international seminars and conferences, Prof. Barman has been engaged with Editorial Boards of several international and national journals and publication houses as a member and reviewer. His areas of interest include the Social and Cultural History of Precolonial, Colonial and Postcolonial India, Environmental History, Caste and Dalit Studies, Indigenous Medicine, Indian Knowledge System, Partition and Migration Studies, Border and Citizenship Studies, River and Water Studies, and Buddhist Studies
